LabCode|4|: The Mass Spectrometer

Did you watch N.C.I.S? Then, can you tell us what was Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) lab babe's name?.... Yes! it's the "Mass spectrometer", today we post an introduction about the general use of Mass spectrometer.
"Mass spectrometry (MS) is an analytical chemistry technique that measures the mass-to-charge ratio and abundance of gas-phase ions.A mass spectrum (plural spectra) is a plot of the ion signal as a function of the mass-to-charge ratio. The spectra are used to determine the elemental or isotopic signature of a sample, the masses of particles and of molecules, and to elucidate the chemical structures of molecules, such as peptides and other chemical compounds. Mass spectrometry works by ionizing chemical compounds to generate charged molecules or molecule fragments and measuring their mass-to-charge ratios.
In a typical MS procedure, a sample, which may be solid, liquid, or gas, is ionized, for example by bombarding it with electrons. This may cause some of the sample's molecules to break into charged fragments. These ions are then separated according to their mass-to-charge ratio, typically by accelerating them and subjecting them to an electric or magnetic field: ions of the same mass-to-charge ratio will undergo the same amount of deflection. The ions are detected by a mechanism capable of detecting charged particles, such as an electron multiplier. Results are displayed as spectra of the relative abundance of detected ions as a function of the mass-to-charge ratio. The atoms or molecules in the sample can be identified by correlating known masses to the identified masses or through a characteristic fragmentation pattern." -Wikipedia-

How the mass spectrometer works?

If something is moving and you subject it to a sideways force, instead of moving in a straight line, it will move in a curve - deflected out of its original path by the sideways force.
Suppose you had a cannonball travelling past you and you wanted to deflect it as it went by you. All you've got is a jet of water from a hose-pipe that you can squirt at it. Frankly, its not going to make a lot of difference! Because the cannonball is so heavy, it will hardly be deflected at all from its original course.
But suppose instead, you tried to deflect a table tennis ball travelling at the same speed as the cannonball using the same jet of water. Because this ball is so light, you will get a huge deflection.
The amount of deflection you will get for a given sideways force depends on the mass of the ball. If you knew the speed of the ball and the size of the force, you could calculate the mass of the ball if you knew what sort of curved path it was deflected through. The less the deflection, the heavier the ball.
The same principle can be applyed to atomic sized particules.
The instrument consists of three major components:
  •     Ion Source: For producing gaseous ions from the substance being studied.
  •     Analyzer: For resolving the ions into their characteristics mass components according to their mass-to-charge ratio.
  •     Detector System: For detecting the ions and recording the relative abundance of each of the resolved ionic species.
With all the above components, a mass spectrometer should always perform the following processes:
  1.     Produce ions from the sample in the ionization source.
  2.     Separate these ions according to their mass-to-charge ratio in the mass analyzer.
  3.     Eventually, fragment the selected ions and analyze the fragments in a second analyzer.
  4.     Detect the ions emerging from the last analyzer and measure their abundance with the detector that converts the ions into electrical signals.
  5.     Process the signals from the detector that are transmitted to the computer and control the instrument using feedback.
General Applications of Mass Spectrometry:
•Environmental analysis
•Forensic analysis
•Clinical research
•Proteomics and genomics
•Generation of physico-chemical data
In the next parts we will talk about the mass spectrometry applications in Forensic analysis.

LabCode|3|: Jammers (Part1)

A mobile phone jammer is an instrument used to prevent cellular phones from receiving signals from base stations. When used, the jammer effectively disables cellular phones. These devices can be used in practically any location, but are found primarily in places where a phone call would be particularly disruptive because silence is expected.
Disrupting a cell phone is the same as jamming any other type of radio communication. A cell phone works by communicating with its service network through a cell tower or base station. Cell towers divide a city into small areas, or cells. As a cell-phone user drives down the street, the signal is handed from tower to tower.
A jamming device transmits on the same radio frequencies as the cell phone, disrupting the communication between the phone and the cell-phone base station in the tower.
It's a called a denial-of-service attack. The jammer denies service of the radio spectrum to the cell-phone users within range of the jamming device.

LabCode|2|: Roaming

Roaming helps ensure that a traveling wireless device (typically a cell phone) is kept connected to a network without breaking the connection. In wireless telecommunications, Traditional Roaming is a general term referring to the ability for a cellular customer to automatically make and receive voice calls, send and receive data, or access other services, including home data services, when travelling outside the geographical coverage area of the home network, by means of using a visited network. For example; should you travel beyond your cell phone company's transmitter range, your cell phone would automatically hop onto another phone company's service, if available.

How does Roaming work?

In order for roaming to work, there are two components involved, the carriers and the phone.
  • The Phone :
In order for the phone to be able to connect to wireless mobile operators, other than the one it was purchased from initially, the device must be compatible with the wireless network used by those carriers. In other words, a CDMA phone may not connect to a GSM network abroad, therefore Verizon and Sprint customers may find out that their handset can’t be used in Europe or in other international markets.

Similarly, not all GSM networks operate on the same bands, therefore not all GSM handsets can be used anywhere on Earth, so you should definitely pay attention to your handset’s connectivity characteristics in case you plan to roam a lot.
If you think 4G LTE connectivity will fix that problem, you should know that not all carriers that are adopting the next-gen wireless standard will use the same spectrum for LTE support, which means that not all LTE handsets will have 4G LTE coverage wherever LTE support is available. But we’ll tackle that problem once LTE becomes available in more and more markets
  • The Carriers
In addition to the phone’s connectivity features, you also need two carriers to make roaming work, your home carrier and the visited carrier. The two mobile operators have to be bound by a mutually beneficial roaming agreement that lets one’s subscribers use roaming when under the other’s coverage. But don’t worry, most carriers, if not all, already have such agreements in place with most carriers, if not with all.
Why is it so important for them to offer roaming features? First of all, it’s all about marketing. Each carrier, especially major ones, want their subscribers to know that they’ll be able to use the handset, which is purchased in most cases for a subsidized two-year contract, abroad and enjoy the same services. And second of all, roaming agreements between carriers aren’t exactly controlled by a regulator (except in the EU), which means that mobile operators can jack up prices and raise their profit margins when it comes to charging for used voice minutes, SMS and MMS messages, and especially data used when roaming.

Even so, because mobile devices and mobile technology did not appear all of a sudden everywhere at the same time, there are various instances in which certain phones will not work in other countries, and we’re going to tell you why that happens in what follows.

ActionCode|1| : S.W.A.T (part 1)

US S.W.A.T Team
SWAT (acronym for "Special Weapons And Tactics") is a commonly used proper name for law enforcement units, which use military-style light weapons and specialized tactics in high-risk operations that fall outside of the capabilities of regular, uniformed police."SWAT" is commonly used internationally, as a colloquial, generic term for these units.
Their duties include: confronting heavily armed criminals; performing hostage rescue and counter-terrorism operations; high risk arrests; and entering armored or barricaded buildings. Such units are often equipped with specialized firearms including submachine guns, assault rifles, breaching shotguns, sniper rifles, riot control agents, and stun grenades. They have specialized equipment including heavy body armor, ballistic shields, entry tools, armored vehicles, advanced night vision optics, and motion detectors for covertly determining the positions of hostages or hostage takers, inside enclosed structures.

  History:

"The use of teams comprised of specially selected, trained and equipped personnel to resolve high-risk incidents, such as barricaded suspect/hostage situations, was born out of necessity. One of the most influential causes for the origination of these teams was the so-called Texas Tower shootings at the University of Texas at Austin, where Charles Whitman killed fifteen people and wounded thirty-one others on August 1, 1966. Also influential were the violent riots and disorders of the decade of the sixties, many of which involved sniper fire directed at police and civilians.
Among the first agencies to organize SWAT teams were the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department, both having established their fledgling teams during the latter part of 1966. The acronym SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) was originated by the Los Angeles Police Department.
The passage of time has proven that the use of SWAT teams is the safest and most effective means of resolving high-risk incidents." [National Tactical Officers Association: ntoa.org]

  Role:

The exact duties differ depending on the agency and jurisdiction involved although all SWAT units can be characterized as being roled with carrying out high risk operations that would normally be outside of the regular law agency's .

  Weapons and Equipment

SWAT team weapons vary from unit to unit. Entry Teams are typically armed with:
  • assault rifle carbines
AR-15 variants like the M4a1, CQBR, Colt Commando
Sig Sauger 551 / 552
HK G36K / G36C
  • sub machine guns
9mm HK MP5
10mm MP510
.40 / .45 HK UMP
5.7mm FN P90
  • semi-automatic pistols
Glock and Sig Sauer 9mm and.40 S&W pistols are common, as are
H&K USPs and
Beretta 92F 9mm
Colt 1911 .45acp pistols.
SWAT weapons are often fitted with tactical accessories such as flash lights, laser pointers, foregrips and various optics.

Tactical gear carried by SWAT teams includes flashbang stun grenades, battering rams, haligan tools, ballistic shields, tactical radios and flexi-cuffs. Clothing includes body armor, protective helmets and eye wear, assault webbing for holding magazines, knee pads, gloves and rappeling harnesses.
